To be effective advocates for prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery at all levels of government, one must understand a few fundamental principles, including the difference between education, advocacy, and lobbying, how, when, and to whom to make your case, and how to manage relationships with policy-makers in an ever-changing political environment. Additional discussion will focus on tools and techniques for effective advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels and how to effectively communicate with elected officials, policy-makers, and their staff to create better policies and more funding opportunities for prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery programs.
