Alcohol, Neurobiology & Mental Capacity

Alcohol, Neurobiology & Mental Capacity

Neurobiology is the study of the nervous system. It combines physiology, anatomy, molecular biology, developmental biology, cytology, mathematical modelling, and psychology to understand the fundamental and emergent properties of neurons and neural circuits.

This aids the understanding of the biological basis of learning, memory, behaviour, perception, and consciousness.

The impact of neurobiology on alcohol misuse and dependence is important in understanding compulsion and choice in vulnerable, chronic, dependent drinkers.

This workshop is part of Alcohol Change UK's national project on Safeguarding Vulnerable Dependent Drinkers. The aim of this project is to ensure that legal frameworks such as the Mental Capacity Act, the Care Act and the Mental Health Act are being used to protect and support vulnerable dependent drinkers.
